Album Notes
Like all the other volumes of Back 2 Back Hits, this disc contains five songs each from two compatible bands. In this case, it's the L.A. boogie band Canned Heat and the San Franciscan psychedelic blues outfit Quicksilver Messenger Service. Both bands had loyal followings at the time, with Canned Heat scoring the hits and Quicksilver racking up the critical respect. However, as the years passed, they quietly faded into history, with only their hits sticking around in the minds of many casual rock fans. Back 2 Back Hits does an excellent job of rounding up those hits from both bands on one disc. Canned Heat's selection is a little weaker than Quicksilver's -- "Bullfrog Blues" could have taken the place of the lame Little Richard duet "Rockin' with the King" -- but "On the Road Again," "Going Up the Country," "Let's Work Together," and "Fried Hockey Boogie" are all here. Quicksilver is represented by "Dino's Song," "Pride of Man," "Who Do You Love, Pt. 1," "Fresh Air," and "What About Me?," which is about as good a distillation of their best-known songs as possible in the space limitations. The end result is a solid disc of late-'60s, psychedelicized blues boogie that's of considerable interest to casual fans on a budget. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Guaranteed to play perfectly.
